I just finished reading Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. It is a very enlightening book, from which I learn what make an outlier:-

  • 10,000 hours of meaningful work
  • privileges – either earned or gifted (including ethnic, family, social, education)
  • opportunities at the right time
  • sufficient intelligence – analytical intelligence, creative intelligence and practical intelligence (practical intelligence is the most important intelligence to success)
  • being outstanding in certain area (this can be the result of factors above)
  • and finally Matthew effect (or "accumulated advantage")

Talent and hard work are necessary, but they are just parts of bigger picture.
